MARIMBAS & STEELPANS COMPETITION 2019

BACKGROUND:  Opportunities for school marimba bands and steelpan/drum bands to perform in public and to listen and learn from other schools/bands/individuals are very limited in the Eastern Cape.  The 2019 Arts Festival provides an excellent performance platform.

The past couple of years the festival was very privileged to have bands from Gonubie, Sunridge and High School Strelitzia.  The Arts Festival decided to bring this unique Zimbabwean instrument to the people.   We want people to learn and appreciate the wonderful warm sounds and the beautiful music of the marimba.   Although a frontier in African music, the marimba is capable of modern music, classical music, and many other styles.

The aim of this competition is to bring together school marimba bands as well as steelpan/steeldrum bands to perform for each other including a huge and enthusiastic but appreciative audience.  Bands will also be given the opportunity to perform together giving the sense of unity, cooperation and enjoyment.

Participating schools/bands will not just perform, win and go home.  No, the Arts Festival is always giving something back to particpants.

We have invited the very popular, professional and premier IRIE VIBES MARIMBA BAND for a full show and thereafter they will conduct a workshop for all interested bands/individuals.   This is OPEN and FREE OF CHARGE.   The IRE VIBES MARIMBA BAND was started by Zimbabwean musician, Rodger Murevanhema and are based in Port Elizabeth.
